finally a posting about my time in NYC (and to let people know I'm alive)

I've had a tough time so far. I've had some fun and have done quite a few things though.

Here is a list of differences I have found:

Juneau: People smile and talk to you in the elevator
NYC: People ignore you and keep straight

Juneau: You always look at people and smile at them
NYC: People ignore you even when you look at them

Juneau: Garbage cans are all bear safe
NYC: Garbage cans are NOT bear safe

Juneau: You can generally trust people
NYC: I have been cheated more than once, people are untrustworthy

Juneau: lots of space
NYC: very little space

Juneau: quick to get everywhere
NYC: takes forever to get anywhere

Juneau: liberal
NYC: VERY VERY VERY liberal

Juneau: climbing gyms = good
NYC: climbing gyms = expensive (if good)

So far I'm surviving and I am learning. I've been sick a couple of times so far which hasn't helped a lot. Also I've been pretty stressed out, but it is getting a lot better. Right now I'm not stressed out.

This is what I wish:

I wish someone (anyone) would come visit me. A lot of the time I feel kind of alone and I miss my friends from Juneau.

If anyone wants to come I've got room, Travis is going to be coming here shortly for a few days ... I am REALLY looking forward to that, then Danelle my cousin is going to visit in September or October.

My apartment is starting to look pretty good now.

I've started to make a couple of friends so that is good. I know I haven't been available enough for them lately and I've been doing a lot by myself, but hopefully that is going to change.

Hang in there. You'll get used to it, but try not to get too used to it. Not smiling at strangers might be normal in NYC, but it's not normal in most of the world. No one wants the smiling-at-strangers Myron to disappear without a trace in NYC.

The other thing I do is always look at people to see if I know them.

I've been getting a LOT better at that.

It is a hard habit to break.

I wanna see pictures of your apartment so I can judge you superficially.

I'll get pictures up on facebook of my apartment nicely outfitted!

I don't have them yet though.

And I had a nice conversation with this older lady (about 70+) on the way to IKEA the other day. She convinced me that I need to go to Coney Island for the day. So I'm going to try and recruit a person to go with me.

Coney Island is fabulous! See the sideshow!

And, don't forget I might be visiting in December. Sadly we all have jobs that are NOT in NYC, so we can't be there all the time. :(

As Sheila said, focus on the things you will miss when you leave NYC, like wonderful food and people watching.

Differences:
Juneau - People get uncomfortable if you watch them.
NYC - People don't care.

Juneau - There are 4 good restaurants in town.
NYC - There are thousands of good restaurants.

Juneau - It costs at least $1,000 to fly to Europe.
NYC - You can fly to Europe for half that.

Juneau - If you want something then you have to order it online and wait for weeks.
NYC - If you want something then you can go to the store and buy it in the same day.

Juneau - Everyone knows everyone, so you have no privacy.
NYC - Anything goes! ;)

Best wishes!

You know I'll manage to visit at some point, and who knows where I'll end up in the next year anyway. We're adventurers!

I loved NYC while I was there, I am sure that the homesickness will subside and you'll be a man about town just like in Juneau in no time at all.
